Welcome back to the Cold Beer Surf Club.
Your host? Well, none other than pro surfer, musician, gardener, boat owner, Santa Barbara native and 805 Beer Authentico Conner Coffin.
Now, we know we always say this, but you’re going to want to get a cold one from the fridge, crack it open, and sit down before reading this: we got a good one today. Why? Well, because in this episode, Conner is sitting down, chatting, and riffing with Sublime’s own Jakob Nowell.
Before you start to give it a listen, let’s provide some context on why this episode of the Cold Beer Surf Club is such a good time. Or, you can start streaming it above while reading here. So, for Conner, certain bands and songs bring up vivid memories of certain times in his life. He used to listen to Sublime all the time while driving around in the van at surf camp, searching for waves when he was around 12 years old, and he was hooked on the raw, eclectic sound. They became a band he listened to a ton from his early teen years to today.
For Conner and us, too, really, it felt surreal to sit across from Jakob the other day and to hear about his approach to stepping in as lead singer for his father’s band. Obviously, there is so much attached to his new role, but Jakob’s humble approach to sharing the music of Sublime with people who need to hear it is very refreshing.
It was great to talk with Jakob about his own musical adventures (Jakob’s Castle), what it feels like to get up to do your first big gig with Sublime on the main stage at Coachella, and much more. You can hear it in full below.
Jakob and Sublime will be playing the first Saturday of the US Open of Surfing, August 3rd. Follow along here and on our socials so you don’t miss it if you can’t make it, and then stay tuned right here for more episodes of the Cold Beer Surf Club.
Each new addition drops monthly. You can stream them only here and on the World Surf League’s websites. So, keep a tab open here so you don’t miss out.
